Registers of patients in private hospitals, 1884-1914 (bulk 1894-1914).

The State Board of Lunacy and Charity gathered information about patients in private mental hospitals, presumably under the authority of St 1867, c 243, which required data from private institutions receiving state aid. St 1898, c 433 placed private mental hospitals directly under the authority of the State Board of Insanity. Registers of patients in private hospitals were created by these and succeeding bodies to track and report on mentally ill persons in private care. Vols. 1 and 2 list patients at various private hospitals and include date of hospital license. Information includes whether patient is sane or insane, inpatient registration no., name, age, sex, marital status, birthplace, residence, occupation, admitting authority, from where received, date of admission, date of discharge, nature of discharge, and disposition. Vol. 3 lists patients at the McLean Asylum for the Insane, known from 1892 as McLean Hospital. While registers were used between 1890 and 1919, admission data predates 1890 and concludes in 1914.
